Holly

Lee was getting himself into worse and worse situations. He had been stealing bits of drugs off the top and charging others extra money in order to cover himself. Somehow Little Jim had found out about his drug habit. Lee guessed he just looked stoned during their meetings but Little Jim couldn’t prove anything because Lee always gave the correct amount of money.

This week Lee was short. He had no idea what he was going to do. It was three hours before his meeting with Little Jim and he was seventy-three Euro down. His allowance granted him by Little Jim wouldn’t have covered that amount at the beginning of the week, let alone now after a week of buying food and things.

Lee was walking, or kind of pacing he guessed, around the city hoping he could do something to get that amount of money. He thought about buying a lotto scratch card but that might result in him needing to find even more money. Lee walked into a shop, knowing he had no other option at this stage, but as he went through the door he saw someone he recognised.

It was Michael Kennedy, Lee’s dad. He was sitting at a bar drinking, as usual. It was strange because Lee had not seen him since he had been kicked out of the house over a year and a half ago. He didn’t even know that Michael was still in Ireland, let alone Cork. If he were recognised he would be arrested. It was dangerous for him to be here. Lee guessed that he had been in contact with him again but Lee didn’t have a phone anymore, Little Jim had that now.

“Dad?” Lee said as he came into the bar.

“Lee?” Michael asked shocked to hear his son’s voice.

“Hi,” he said again.

“I didn’t think you’d come,” Michael said sounding surprised.

“I didn’t think I would either,” Lee admitted.

Michael ordered another drink.

“How are you?” he asked as he drank it quickly, “you don’t look so good,” he noted.

“I’m doing okay,” Lee said as he slipped Michael’s wallet from his pocket and took two fifties, “in college now, working too, you know grown up stuff.”

“That’s good to hear,” Michael said and patted his son on the shoulder as Lee replaced the wallet.

Lee finished his drink with his dad but then he had to leave, the topic of Maeve and her death didn’t come up at all.

“Dad,” Lee said, “I arranged to meet someone for something important not too long after being here,” he said, “just in case us meeting together didn’t work out.”

“I understand,” Michael said, “maybe we could do this again sometime?”

“Sure,” Lee said, “give me a call next time you are in Cork.”

Lee left the bar he had entered with not enough money to pay his debts, now he had enough to calm himself down after the meeting and buy that scratch card.

Lee headed off towards the office feeling a lot more confident this time than he had before.
